Cool facts about Antigua & Barbuda

-Antigua is Spanish for "ancient" and barbuda is Spanish for "bearded"

- Antigua has 365 beaches. One for each day of the year!


 




-The island got it’s name from Christopher Columbus in 1493. Santa Maria de la Antigua.

- Antigua ranks 46th in the world by nominal GDP (gross domestic product)  per catita (16,702 US$)

- Barbuda is a flat coral island about 30 miles north

- Antigua is the largest of the English speaking Leeward Islands. Redonda is uninhabited and a less than 1 square mile nature reserve.

- The national flag of Antingua and Barbuda was adopted on 2/27/1967. The 7 point golden sun of the Antigua & Barbuda flag represents the dawn of a new era. The colour red, the life blood of slave forefathers and the dynamism of the people. Blue represents hope, black, the soil and African heritage and gold, blue & white Antigua's and Barbuda's tourist attractions sun, sea and sand.

- Antigua and Barbuda became an independent state within the Commonwealth of Nations on 1 November 1981.
